Coney Island Food & Things to Do

Coney Island is where the subway runs out of city. Four lines end at one station, the train comes up into daylight, and suddenly there's an ocean, a hundred-year-old Ferris wheel and a man selling you a hot dog with the confidence of a world leader. It's loud, it's weird, and it's the best dumb day in New York.

The Coney Island vibe and the trains

The boardwalk is the main street. Old-timers on benches, kids with cotton candy, people playing music nobody asked for. Off season, it turns into something else entirely: empty, gray, wind off the water, the rides sleeping under tarps. Both are worth the ride, for different reasons.

The D, F, N and Q all end at Stillwell Ave, and the F and Q also hit West 8th St for the aquarium. It's a long ride from most places, which is the whole point. Bring water and a hoodie, even in summer. NYC by season tells you when to go.

Coney Island munchies

Nathan's Famous on Surf Ave is the original, hot dogs and crinkle fries, and you are required to have them at least once. Boardwalk stands do clams, fried everything and cold lemonade. Totonno's is the coal-oven legend a few blocks away, but it's been running limited hours and it's been for sale, so call before you plan around it. L&B Spumoni Gardens is a detour on the way home, and worth it. The full list is in NYC munchies.

Things to do at Coney Island when you're baked

Deno's Wonder Wheel has the swinging cars that slide on a rail and make you grab the bar. The Cyclone is a wooden coaster from 1927, and if you've had an edible, ride it before the thing fully lands. Luna Park has the rest of the rides, all on a seasonal schedule, so check the calendar.

The New York Aquarium sits right on the boardwalk, and the sharks and the sea lions are exactly as good as you think. It's open year-round, which makes it the winter move. Coney Island USA runs a small museum and a sideshow when it's in season. In summer the Cyclones play baseball right by the boardwalk, and a minor league game is a perfect low-stakes night. More in things to do high in NYC.

Where you can sesh near Coney Island

The beach and the boardwalk are both smoke-free, even though the whole place feels like it should be allowed. Eat an edible before you leave, or sesh at home. Start low and remember it's a long train ride back. The rest is in where you can sesh in NYC.

Coney Island: the good and the annoying

The good

The ocean, on a subway fare. Old rides, a real boardwalk and a hot dog with a century of history.

The annoying

It's a long trip. Rides close for the cold months. Summer weekends are packed, and nothing about the food is cheap anymore.
